Arab symposium recommends public awareness campaign

18 September, 2002

A public awareness campaign to explain epilepsy and show it to be a treatable condition was recommended by delegates to the first annual Jeddah Neuroscience Update symposium, according to a report on Arabnews.com.

The main topic of the symposium was epilepsy, and those attending heard that epilepsy was still not properly dealt with in Saudi Arabia, due to the stigma associated with the condition, problems with diagnosis and ignorance of the treatments available.

Two speakers, Dr Michel Baulac, head of the Epilepsy Unit at Hopital de la Pitie-Salpetriere in Paris, and Dr Arthur Grant, director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at University of California in Irvine, talked about new research in the field of epilepsy - in anticipating seizures, epilepsy surgery and the development of new anti-epileptic medication.
