Carers receive cash boost from government

2 Oct 2000

A massive cash boost to enable up to 75,000 more carers to receive a break from their caring duties, was announced by Health Secretary, Alan Milburn.

The Government will increase the amount of money put aside specifically to support carers, from £50 million this year to £100m in 2003-4.

Alan Milburn said:

"One in six homes - some 17 per cent - has a carer, and the dedicated contribution they make cannot be overestimated. This new investment - a doubling of the Special Carers Grant from £50 million this year to £100 million by 2003 - underlines our continued commitment to making sure that carers have practical help and support and, importantly, proper respite from the tasks of minding older, infirm, disabled and sick people.
