Epilepsy cases in the Philippines "rising"

A Philippine neurologist has
expressed "alarm" at the rising
number of cases of epilepsy diagnosed in the country, according to a
report in the Sun Star Dumaguete.

Dr Brenda Diputado, from the Silliman
University Medical Center
and member of the Philippine League of Epilepsy (PLE), lamented that
the Department
of Health
is not giving importance and priority to epilepsy
cases in the country.

Diputado said that
while she has however said she has no exact data on the number of deaths
due to epilepsy, records show more than 1,200
cases of epilepsy for the last 10 years.

The first week in September was declared National Epilepsy Week by President
Macapagal-Arroyo following the recommendation of the PLE
