Inappropriate prescription drugs for travellers

8 May, 2000

The Consumer Association has found that many people on holiday abroad are being given ineffective drugs from pharmacists due to a lack of questions being asked about their symptoms.

Following visits to 54 pharmacists in Egypt, Spain and Turkey it was found that only 25 per cent of the drugs sold were appropriate. The researchers visiting Cairo and Istanbul were given antibiotics to treat diarrhoea that are only available on prescription in the UK.
