New technique to allow EEG and functional MRI tests to run together

30 November, 2005

A technique has been developed to allow functional MRI (fMRI) scans to take place at the same time as EEG tests.

Researchers,
speaking at the recent meeting of the Italian Association of Sleep
Medicine, explained that in the past running the tests together was
impossible as "they interfered with each other electronically".
However, a special screen has now been developed to enable both sets of
tests to be run at the same time. This, it is hoped, will enable to
doctors to more easily pinpoint the place in the brain where seizures
the seizures originated.

The screen was developed by a team from the Policlinico di Tor Vergata, the Enrico Fermi Centre and Fondazione Santa Lucia in Rome.
