Flu vaccine and epilepsy

8 Oct 2014

The UK Department of Health yesterday released its yearly update on the flu vaccinations. People with epilepsy are not commonly at higher risk from flu, but some people may receive a free vaccination

Some people with one of several illnesses or long-term conditions may be at a high risk of developing complications if they catch flu.

Vaccine bottle with a syringeIn the UK, if you are living with one of these you will qualify for an annual flu jab. The listed conditions include liver disease, diabetes, cerebral palsy, heart or lung disease and problems with your immune system.

People with epilepsy are not considered a high-risk group. This means that if you have epilepsy you will not automatically qualify for a free vaccination.

However, if your family doctor believes that you as an individual have a higher risk of complications, they may decide to vaccinate you.

For more information, speak to your family doctor to see if you qualify for a jab. Alternatively, read the online flu factsheet or email the Epilepsy Helpline team.
