Patient information for Topamax updated

5 August, 2003

Updated safety information for people with epilepsy taking Topamax (topiramate) has been issued by manufacturers following previously unreported side effects.

In letters to health care professionals in the United States and Canada, Ortho-McNeil/Janssen-Ortho passed on information regarding rare reports of decreased sweating (35 cases per million patients) and hyperthermia.

According to the letter, reports have primarily involved children and most cases have occurred in association with exposure to warm temperatures and/or vigorous activity. The manufacturers suggest that children should be monitored closely for evidence of decreased sweating and increased body temperature, especially in hot weather, and that they should drink lots of water before and during activities such as exercise or exposure to warm temperatures.
