Why I Chose to Volunteer
I’m Emily, 23, from Manchester. I became a Project Volunteer at Epilepsy Action in October because epilepsy has always been part of my life, three of my family members, including my mum, live with the condition. After graduating last summer, I wanted to give back, raise awareness, and learn new skills.
Finding the Right Role
When I explored volunteering opportunities, I first considered fundraising. But then I discovered an open role for a Project Volunteer, a chance to contribute to marketing, events, and communications projects. With my digital and social media experience, it felt like the perfect fit.
What My Role Involves
As a volunteer, I support the digital communications team on campaigns big and small, from Purple Day to social media trends and marathon events. I help with creative planning, research, and brainstorming ideas to raise awareness about epilepsy.
I volunteer alongside my part-time job, joining weekly online briefings and occasional office days in Leeds. These experiences have taught me about PR strategy, campaign planning, and the power of community.
The Benefits of Volunteering
Volunteering has been incredibly rewarding. It’s given me:
• A sense of achievement and purpose
• Confidence to share epilepsy information with friends
• Opportunities to connect with others affected by epilepsy
It’s also helped me professionally, developing skills in digital marketing, research, and teamwork.
How You Can Get Involved
If you’re thinking about volunteering, Epilepsy Action offers flexible volunteering opportunities, including:
• Peer Supporter
• Vlogging
• Micro-volunteering
When you sign up, you’ll join the Action Team, completing short monthly activities like sharing posts or surveys. Plus, you’ll have access to training, resources, and volunteer socials.
Why It Matters
Epilepsy can feel isolating, but volunteering creates a sense of belonging and helps raise awareness. For me, it’s been a fantastic experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone considering making a difference.
