When you think about what it must be like to be a trustee, what do you envisage?
Boardrooms and by-laws? Policies and pie-charts? Meetings and strategies?
Well, there might be some of that. But there is also all of this:

Between board meetings and strategic planning, the trustees do so much to support their organisations. They guide and encourage, they keep us on the right tracks and they help drive us forward to help even more people.
And this year, their efforts didn’t stop there. Our trustees marked Epilepsy Action’s 75th anniversary with a range of hair-raising activities and impressive feats of endurance, raising funds and awareness for the organisation that means so much to them.
Katie, honorary treasurer of the Board of Trustees, who did a skydive, said: “It means the world to me to fundraise for Epilepsy Action. I wouldn’t be in such a happy place now if it wasn’t for the support I received from Epilepsy Action during the most difficult years I faced. To think the money we have raised will help others is just wonderful.”
Cameron, who completed 126 miles on foot over eight consecutive days, added: “It’s been an exhausting but deeply rewarding experience – sore legs and all – and it’s been a privilege to support Epilepsy Action, not only as a trustee, but also as someone who now understands the strategic value of Kendal Mint Cake and squashed bananas.”
Sally, who ran the Hampton Court Palace 10k, explained: “Epilepsy Action means so much to me and my family. The charity provides support, information and understanding for people living with epilepsy and their loved ones. They help make life with epilepsy less isolating and more manageable while making a real difference in improving care and awareness.
“Being a trustee has given me a deeper appreciation of just how vital that work is and I’m proud to play even a small part in helping to continue it.”
And Jane, chair of the board, who completed a wing walk in September, simply added: “I’m so glad to have helped in a small way to raise awareness of this most amazing, supportive charity.”
This week is Trustees’ Week, a time to show our appreciation for the unsung heroes working behind the scenes to steer the ship, propel it forwards and help prepare for any choppy waters ahead. Thank you!
While we are not currently recruiting for trustees, there are other ways you could get involved with the governance of the charity. We have two committees: Corporate Governance and Finance and Strategic Policy that can include co-opted members. If you think you have any experience in either of these areas, do get in touch at exec@epilepsy.org.uk.
