We fight to improve the lives
of everyone affected by epilepsy

Brainwaves, by Caroline

This poem was an entry in Epilepsy Today's first-ever festive poetry contest: Outside the lines.

I was diagnosed with epilepsy in 1995 while doing my split finals at university. My epilepsy is now controlled but only after two operations, several bouts of status epilepticus and many seizures. I enjoy writing poetry, reading and trying new things – most recently climbing, sailing and knitting.

Electric pulse shatters moment of calm
Limbs thrashing against thought and will
The vicious assault of my brain on myself
Controlled by a small orange pill
