The Irish Life Dublin Marathon
is one of Europe’s most iconic and best‑supported 26.2‑mile events, attracting over 20,000 runners annually to the friendly and vibrant streets of Ireland’s capital. Known as the “Friendly Marathon,” the race is celebrated for its incredible atmosphere, supportive crowds, and scenic single‑lap route through Dublin’s most historic neighbourhoods. The course is largely flat with gentle rolling sections, making it ideal for first‑time marathoners and seasoned runners chasing a personal best.
The marathon begins in Dublin’s city centre — with recent editions starting near Fitzwilliam Street — and takes participants past many of the city’s best‑known landmarks, including Trinity College, St Stephen’s Green, and the expansive Phoenix Park, one of Europe’s largest enclosed urban parks. Runners then follow a loop through welcoming residential communities before returning toward the heart of the city for a memorable finish near Merrion Square.
With average October temperatures of 12–14°C, Dublin offers ideal marathon running conditions, and the famously enthusiastic local crowds line the entire route to cheer runners home. Many describe the support as among the best they’ve ever experienced at a marathon.
