A major milestone in epilepsy care has been reached in the UK. The first patient has received the EASEE® implant at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. This new treatment is now available on the NHS for people with focal epilepsy who don’t respond to medication or other treatments such as VNS (Vagus Nerve Stimulation).

What is the EASEE® implant?

EASEE® (Epicranial Application of Stimulation Electrodes for Epilepsy) is a low invasive neurostimulation system developed by German company Precisis for patients who suffer for focalised drug refractory epilepsy. The EASEE® device is placed under the skin, sitting flush against the skull bone, and is then connected by a thin wire to a small battery implanted in the chest. The procedure typically takes less than an hour, and most patients are able to return home the same day.

This approach offers a gentler alternative to traditional brain surgery, with fewer risks and a faster recovery.

How does it work?

EASEE® delivers personalised electrical stimulation to the brain which aims to interrupt and prevent seizures using two types of signals both of which are below perception:

  • Slow, steady signals to calm overactive brain areas
  • High frequency pulses to stop seizures before they begin

The system also includes a handheld controller that allows patients to trigger extra stimulation if an aura is detected, giving more control over seizure management. The system is designed to adapt over time, providing long-term support for seizure control.

What do the results show?

A two-year clinical study led by Professor Andreas Schulze-Bonhage in Germany showed strong and sustained benefits:

  • 65% of patients had at least a 50% reduction in seizures after 24 months
  • 81% continued using the device throughout the study
  • In addition to fewer seizures, many patients experienced clearer thinking, improved memory, and a better overall quality of life

Notably, the clinical study reported no serious side effects related to stimulation or surgery, which can be found in other neuromodulation options.

These results confirm that EASEE® is both safe and effective for long-term use.

Is EASEE® right for you?

If you’re living with focal epilepsy and have not responded to medication or other therapies, EASEE® may be able to help.

It is now available on the NHS so please speak to your clinician to find out if EASEE® is right for you.
