New game Cyberpunk 2077, out today, contains flashing images which could trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy.
According to players, sections of the long-awaited game that may trigger seizures include braindances, and bars and clubs, where blinking red, blue and white images are used. The general progression of the game also has red flickering animations throughout.
Liana Ruppert, associate editor for Game Informer, a video games content publication, has photosensitive epilepsy. She has written a guide to the game, highlighting the riskiest sections and her own experiences. She wrote that she had one big tonic-clonic seizure while playing and felt like she was close to more seizures at several points during the game.
Cyberpunk 2077 game developer CD Projekt Red tweeted: “We’re working on adding a separate warning in the game, aside from the one that exists in the EULA [end user licence agreement]. Regarding a more permanent solution, [the development] team is currently exploring that and will be implementing it as soon as possible.”
